Microlearning for Parental Engagement

I led the design and rollout of a mobile-first microlearning solution using 7taps to keep parents engaged with content on reading with their children between live training sessions. I introduced the platform, designed and wrote the learning modules, and distributed them via WhatsApp groups, reaching busy parents in a way that was simple, accessible, and practical. This project proved that, when thoughtfully designed, microlearning can impact everyday behavior.

🔍 Challenge

Our program aimed to help parents support their children’s reading through structured in-person training. However, we faced a critical challenge: How do we keep parents engaged with learning between sessions, especially when they’re busy, often juggling multiple responsibilities, and have limited time or digital literacy?

We needed a solution that would allow us to reinforce key behaviors and ideas, without overwhelming parents or requiring them to attend additional sessions.

đź’ˇ Solution

After researching several options, I identified microlearning as the best way to meet our parents where they already were: on mobile. I introduced 7taps, a mobile-first LMS that delivers short, easy-to-digest lessons—no app, no login, just a link.

We used it to deliver bite-sized modules that:

  • Focused on one key reading behavior at a time

  • Used simple, visual storytelling to model what to do

  • Were shared directly via WhatsApp parent groups, which we were already using for communication

This allowed us to supplement our in-person training with timely, relevant content that parents could access anytime, anywhere.

🧠 Instructional Design Approach

Each module was created with the goal of being:

  • Simple enough to grasp in under 2 minutes

  • Relevant to everyday parenting routines

  • Supportive, using language that encouraged rather than instructed

Instead of overloading parents with information, each lesson focused on one idea only, such as “Let your child choose the book” or “Pause to ask questions while reading.” These modules reflected the larger curriculum while remaining light, focused, and immediately applicable.

âś… Outcome

This microlearning initiative enabled us to extend the reach and impact of our training without asking more of our parents’ time. The content was:

  • Accessible across all devices, even for low-bandwidth users

  • Flexible, allowing parents to learn at their own pace

  • Consistent, reinforcing behaviors between in-person sessions

More importantly, it proved that simple tech and thoughtful content design can meaningfully support parent engagement—especially when built around the realities of their daily lives.
